What Are The Complications That Can Occur?

Lip tattooing can activate a Herpes Simplex viral infection. If you have ever experienced an outbreak you must contact your medical professional, (dentist or doctor) regarding proper medication before you proceed with the tattoo. Individuals using anticoagulants or immunosuppressive drugs need to check with their physician before proceeding.

Immediately after the procedure, the lips are swollen and no matter what color was applied, they are bright red for up to 4 days! This is not the time to have a special event planned! After the topical anesthetic wears off, the lips will be painful and stinging for 24 hours or more, depending on the sensitivity of an individual’s lips. The swelling can last for a week or more but cold compresses reduce swelling time.

You will be instructed to avoid touching or picking at the lips as they heal. You will be advised to avoid any sun activities, especially around water during the healing time, no heavy exercise, bending or kissing. You also will need to keep your head elevated at night.
